Do you get less than 7 or 8 hours sleep per night? If so, you are likely to be sleep deprived.
You may be unaware of it or you may feel chronically sleepy. You probably already know that sleep deprivation is not good for your health, but did you know it could be making you fat?
Researchers at the University of Chicago have reported that hormonal imbalances can result from lack of sleep. These imbalances trigger a decrease in leptin – a hormone which helps make you feel full, and an increase in ghrelin – a hormone which triggers hunger.
Children are also affected by these hormonal changes, so ensure yours are getting plenty of quality sleep to avoid risking obesity and allowing proper growth.
Sleep is crucial to our bodies metabolic systems – fat burning occurs then, don’t disrupt this process by eating too close to bedtime.
You may have heard leptin and ghrelin discussed by Dr Oz on the Oprah TV show.
